Tow Operator Struck and Killed in California

A 61-year-old tow operator, from Dublin, Calif., was struck and killed on June 23 as he assisted a motorist in a disabled vehicle on I-280 in Redwood City, Calif.

The operator, who was identified verbally on a news report on KTVU, was a contractor for the Bay Area Freeway Service Patrol, which works with Caltrans and the California Highway Patrol (CHP) to respond to vehicle breakdowns during high commute times.

According to the CHP, the crash occurred at 3:40 p.m. as the operator was on the right shoulder of the interstate. A lumber truck reportedly veered off the roadway and struck the tow truck and the operator.

The driver of the lumber truck, a 25-year-old male from San Jose, stopped near the scene and cooperated with authorities.

A news report stated he failed to follow the state’s move over law.
