New Jersey Tow Operator Struck and Killed on I-287

A tow operator was struck and killed on July 2 as he assisted a disabled passenger vehicle on I-287 in Harding Township, NJ.
According to the state police, the operator, Daniel “DJ” Ortiz, 24, from Hopatcong was on the right shoulder of the roadway between 12 and 1 p.m. when a Jeep SUV drove onto the shoulder and hit the tow truck, the disabled vehicle, and Ortiz.
Ortiz was taken to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
The driver of the Jeep received minor injuries.
Ortiz worked for Ron and Sons Towing of Kenvil, NJ. He was described as one of the “kindest, most helpful, sweetest, and friendliest people you could ever meet.”
