It Is What It Is
Do you sometimes feel like there’s no solution to change something and you find yourself shrugging your shoulders and saying, “it is what it is”?
In many companies there are employees who can fill in when someone is on vacation or calls in sick. That is not the case for my small towing company. I know my employees are my most valuable assets. I also know that I don’t tell them enough of how I appreciate them, and all the extra things they do. This was most evident this past week, when it was literally all hands on deck.
I had one employee on vacation – actually, he was out deer hunting, I was babysitting my grandchildren, my husband was home sick and one of my employees received a phone call that his dad was in the hospital.
I am the dispatcher and receptionist, the employee who was on vacation is my mechanic, and my husband and other employees are the tow operators. That day, I was down three people. Now what?
As towers, we face challenges every day. I’ve heard we’re called “masters of disasters,” which I believe is true. How often are you faced with a situation where you roll up on what seems a disastrous scene and wonder how the heck are you going to handle it. I know from experience, though, that your mind is working on it even as you get out of the truck, and after a walk-around, you know you “got this.”
That morning when the you-know-what hit the fan, I shrugged my shoulders and said, “It is what it is, and everything will get handled somehow.”
And you know what? My awesome employees did just that — and they were happy to explain how they took care of everything!
