Tow operator Derrick Hamilton of Aber’s Towing in Ashland, Ohio, has been awarded a Civilian Medal of Honor award for his actions that saved three lives in a fatal July car crash.

According to the Ashland Fire Chief, a Saturn Outlook with seven occupants was struck from behind by a tractor-trailer. Both vehicles left the roadway and crashed with the tractor-trailer on top of the Saturn, trapping the occupants inside.

Four of the occupants were killed, but Hamilton was able to maneuver his tow truck through trees to lift the tractor-trailer from the vehicle, allowing rescuers to save three of the victims.

The Ashland Fire Department issued the award, the Ashland Division of Fire’s Civilian Medal of Honor.
