Cheering Up Patients

A few months before I graduated high school I began putting in job applications at local businesses for secretarial work. I know I’m dating myself, but I had taken business courses of typing, dictation and shorthand — which is almost equivalent to texting today.

I felt pretty good after a job interview with a manufacturing company. But the next day I received a phone call from the woman who interviewed me. She said she didn’t see a fit for me in their office and that I would be better off cheering up patients at a hospital.

At first I was crushed, but after thinking about it I thought: “Who would want to work in their stuffy old office anyway?” If they couldn’t accept me for who I am, I told myself, it really wasn’t a good fit for either of us.

I know you have to sell yourself on a resume with your skills and experience, but your personality has a lot to do with how you would fit into a company and how happy you would be working there.

Whether you’re a professional in the towing industry or cheering up patients, here’s some good advice from Gratitude, The Life Blog: “Always be yourself, express yourself, have faith in yourself, do not go out and look for a successful personality and duplicate it. We must not allow other people’s limited perceptions to define us. Being yourself is all it takes.”
