The North Carolina state House voted unanimously 111-0 Tuesday, July 6, 2010, to prohibit towers from taking a car from a private lot unless the towing company’s name and telephone number are printed there on a large sign, according to a news report.. They are also prohibited from hauling a car more than 15 miles away in most cases, or 25 miles at most, as well as prohibited from forcing a car owner to waive legal rights to get the car back. The legislation applies to 17 counties and cities in the state, mostly urban areas, including Richmond county and Charlotte city. The legislation allows local governments to limit fees and set other restrictions, such as caps. The legislation will now go back for concurrence in the Senate, which gave unanimous approval to a slightly different version last month.
