A tow operator was struck and killed Thursday, January 18 on the Indiana Toll Road at mile marker 114.2 north of Shipshewana in LaGrange County.
The Indiana State Police reports that crews were on the scene of an incident at that location at approximately 9:40 a.m. cleaning up a diesel spill and removing a tractor-trailer that had been involved in a previous crash.
A Dodge Ram pickup towing an enclosed trailer lost control as it traveled eastbound. It crossed the median and struck the tow truck that was in the inside shoulder of the westbound lanes. The pickup then struck tow operator Martin Troyer, 63 of Sturgis, MI, who was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The driver of the pickup remained at the scene. Drugs or alcohol are not believed to be factors, but driving too fast for conditions was suspected to be a factor as roads were said to be slick from recent snow.
Police are investigating the incident.
