Who We Are

Jul 18th, 2014 | By | Category: Jack Schrock's Blog

Jack SchrockIt has been said by those much wiser than me that we all fall into one of three categories:

1. The Contestants – those who create jobs and opportunities for us.

2. The Spectators – those who understand the contest but only talk about it. And …

3. The Uninformed – those of us who don’t participate at any level except to complain while depending on others for support.

A good friend falls into the first category. He put himself through college where he earned an engineering degree that led him into a management position in major hospital construction. Upon retirement he redirected his energy to the benefit of our community. He led others to maintain the park, erectile cut the grass and clean out our local creek from time to time for which they were voted “citizens of the year.” He went on to serve on our city council — where his energy and good works continued — followed by a term as mayor, a position he won unopposed.

As our town CEO he balanced the budget while maintaining our streets, expanding our police department and hiring a part-time city administrator. And he did a great deal more than that. He updated our town ordinances, solicited and supported the development of a senior housing project while expanding our city limits and promoting business expansion that substantially contributed to our tax base and cash flow.

That’s the good news. The bad news is that he was not re-elected. And as a “Category 1 Overachiever,” his defeat at the polls has stopped him and his many pending efforts dead in their tracks. The Spectators (Category 2) are abuzz about all of this like magpies and the Uninformed (Category 3) continue stumbling along, surviving on the dribble from The Spectators.

I talked at some length with my friend, and he has already picked himself up and is heading in a new direction because we rely on The Contestants to keep us cared for and safe.

Take a close look at T & R and we can find examples of all three categories. Thank goodness for the Contestants among us. Without them we would still be junkyard dogs.
