Too Late Smart

My German ancestors would often say “too soon old, decease too late smart” and if I were smart, this I would be rich and famous or would I?

When we set about to chart the path to success, it is sometimes difficult to see beyond today or tomorrow. That’s something like driving at high speed down the highway and following the road by looking through a hole in the floorboard, instead of through the windshield, which gives a much better perspective. In other words, we respond to today’s challenges with today’s solutions and that often gets us off the success path and onto a detour.

As to the second part, I’m not sure most of us truly want to be rich and famous. Most would opt to be financially secure to the point that they could do what they wanted to do, when they wanted to do it. And, as to the famous part, again most of us would just as soon not have a tribe of cameramen following us around.

So, what does all of this mean? Well, I have found that annual goal setting is useful, so long as we’re willing to readjust those goals as circumstances dictate.

Most of us have set about to do a particular thing only to discover something that appears to be more exciting or profitable along the way, so we jog off in a new direction. Nothing wrong with that — we are seizing on a new opportunity. Besides, there are so many variables affecting our lives and businesses these days it is impossible to accurately project where we will be in, say, five or ten years.

The key, in my opinion, is just to keep on keeping on taking care of business on a daily basis and everything will fall in place over the long run.

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
