On the night of Jan. 8, Matt Reeves, 38, was traveling on Highway 1 from Calgary when his vehicle fishtailed in blizzard conditions and ended up in a snowy median, news reports said. After calling the Royal Canadian Mounted Police several times for help, he learned the road was closed and a towing ban was in effect.

Reeves phoned his mother, who also called police, pleading with them to rescue her son. She also called local towing services, the report said.
