Knowledge at Our Fingertips

Geri RoskopfMy in-laws recently sold their home of 60 years. They had bookshelves filled with encyclopedias,  the Google of my era — only in hardcover book form. Before I boxed up the encyclopedias, I opened one up and could hardly read the tiny print. How did I ever do my homework research from these books? Today if we want or need to research anything we just Google it and have the information we need instantly.

There’s a saying that knowledge is power. The more you know, the more you grow. When you gain knowledge you understand more easily and to understand is truly powerful. But being knowledgeable isn’t just one quality, it’s many qualities and a process of learning, experiencing, knowing and then understanding.

My mom used to tell me to learn something as I headed off to school. I found myself telling my children the same thing as they headed out the door. Knowledge helps us face all aspects in life. It can help us overcome weakness and faults and face dangers and difficulties with courage and confidence. It plays an important role in the progress of science, arts and creativity.

Ernest Holmes invented the first tow truck 100 years ago. He would be truly amazed that through his knowledge to build that first tow truck, he has inspired the creation of the advanced equipment used today to clear roadways, keep businesses going and growing and unify the towing and recovery industry through state and national towing associations.

While Google may be at our fingertips to gain knowledge, mom really did know best. Go out and learn something. The process of learning, experiencing, knowing and then understanding is one of the best ways know and grow.
