Fresno, Calif., Seeks to Establish Private Impound Lot

Nov 5th, 2010 | By | Category: National News

The Fresno Police Department is working to establish a single private impound lot where vehicles ordered towed by police would be taken. The goal is to streamline the process of returning vehicles to owners and improve customer service, cheapest reports said. Towing companies contracted with the city, however, are saying that losing the income from storing vehicles at their lots will be devastating to their businesses.

The City of Fresno estimates it could make $4 million by instituting the private yard, a report said, and the city would receive approximately $300 from each vehicle.

The 43 towing companies contracted with the city would still tow vehicles, reports said. A police department spokesman said towers will have an opportunity to bid on the project.

Towing companies say the loss of revenue will cause them to go out of business. More than 40 towing companies gathered in northwest Fresno yesterday to unite against the proposal, reports said.
