Emotions and the Sky

I travel west on my way home, and have had the opportunity to see awesome, beautiful sunsets. Sometimes the sun is a gigantic, orange ball surrounded by vivid red, yellow, pink and purple. The scenes often help to remind me that even at the end of a bad day we can find something to smile about.

You may be wondering what the color of the sky has to do with towing. Well, not much really, but it does have a lot of parallels to what emotions we experience. If you take some of the basic emotions we feel – love, joy surprise, anger, sadness, disgust, fear – you can look to the sky to see how these emotions are played out. Love and joy can be reflected in the bright sun with clear, blue skies. Anger, sadness and fear can be represented by dark, stormy clouds with streaks of lightening. Disgust can be dark, rolling clouds just before a tornado or hurricane. Surprise can be the rainbow after a storm.

Like the weather reflected in the sky, our emotions can change quickly. Anger is one of the fastest emotions we have, and oftentimes it’s the one that gets us into the most trouble. We don’t have control over the weather, but we do have control over our emotions.

I can always tell when someone is angry or upset when they come into the office. It’s like there’s a black cloud following them in. While I don’t look forward to having to deal with an upset customer, it gives me the opportunity to remind myself to stay calm and focused.

The next time you’re dealing with customers with dark, stormy clouds and lightning, put your focus on clear, blue skies.
