The Charlotte, view N.C., City Council is proposing new rules for private property towing. According to a news report, the proposed regulations include:

• Tow companies would have to accept credit or debit cards and be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week in order for motorists to retrieve their vehicles.

• Towed vehicles would have to be stored in the Charlotte city limits.

• Motorists cannot be charged to get belongings from vehicles.

• Tow operators must notify police before towing a vehicle.

• Motorists would not have to wait more than 45 minutes to get their vehicles back.

• If motorists arrive before the towing operator tows the vehicle, the tow operator would not be allowed to complete the tow.

• Private property owners would have to make parking signs easily visible upon entering their lots.

Violations of the proposed rules could result in fines up to $500. A public hearing is scheduled for Feb. 14, and the council could vote on the proposal Feb. 28, the report said.
