Annual Physical Exams

Let’s face it, cure being healthy in the towing industry is a challenge — stress, long hours with little sleep, and our eating habits are atrocious — usually grabbing a burger and fries on the run or eating at 9 at night. Exercise? Yeah, we all go to the gym three times a week don’t we?

I always dread my annual physical exam, and as I get older and the pounds are harder to take off, it seems even more so. The last exam I had, my doctor sat me down and listed the factors a woman faces for heart disease — the number one killer of women. They include cholesterol levels, high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, weight, physical activity and family history.

We went through each of these factors for where I am in my life. My doctor advised me that while I can’t change my family history of heart disease, a modest change to my diet and lifestyle can improve my heart health as much as 80 percent.

I explained to him that my job pretty much puts me sitting at a desk all day, and how hard it is to eat a balanced diet in this business. He suggested adding 10 minutes to the time I walk on my treadmill and to get up from my desk more often at work and do some stretching exercises or walk briskly in place for a few minutes. He also suggested eating smaller amounts during the day, increasing fruits and vegetables and to make sure to start with a hearty breakfast.

He said there are no excuses for not eating healthier foods such as apples, nuts, etc., as they do not need any preparation to make and are readily available — just need to plan better. I guess you can’t argue with that. Last, he suggested drinking more water and getting plenty of sleep. I would love to get more sleep, but again, it’s hard when you have a towing business.

Although we discussed the risks of heart disease for women, I believe he could be talking to any one of us in the towing industry. I guess my annual physical exam was a reminder that if I don’t take care of myself, I won’t be around to take care of others.

I’ve heard dark chocolate is good for you. I think I’ll have to pick some up. No preparation to make and readily available — just like the doctor recommended.
