A Happier New Year

Geri Roskpf PhotoMy morning started with a phone call from a lady who wanted to know about the accident damage to her Toyota Rav 4. She was taken to the hospital and didn’t get to see her vehicle. She wasn’t sure if she had insurance because she thinks the policy she had ended on December 31 – today is January 3. I just gave a big sigh and my first thought was, ambulance Happy New Year – here we go again with more excuses of “it’s not my fault I don’t have insurance …”

For a new year resolution, I told myself I was going to be more upbeat, find some joy every day, try to make someone laugh, and if not, at least get them to smile. This resolution is a challenge for me because of the many phone calls like the one above. It seems people today just don’t take responsibility – it’s always someone else’s fault and I get the brunt of it all. And due to the nature of our business, customers are not always happy and in a good mood when they need a tow truck.

A quote from Elbert Hubbard really sums it up – “Don’t take life too seriously. You’ll never get out of it alive.”

We can be serious when needed, but let’s face it, we’re not going to be on this earth forever and we might as well spend the time we have being happy instead of stressed and worried. At least we should try to recognize and appreciate some humor in our busy lives.

I received an email containing a cartoon with two faces: one of a smiling child with the caption: “the face you were born with” and another of a frowning, grimacing adult face with the caption: “the face you’ve created.”

What face are you creating? Stay safe, well and Happier New Year!
